🎙️ “My City” hitmaker Sam Fischer Discusses His Sexuality on 'On The Record with Poppy Reid'
From self-doubt to self-love, multi-Platinum artist Sam Fischer shares it all on On the Record—including his coming out moment.

“I’m not totally straight,” he said, mid-conversation, after a reflective moment about joy, self-acceptance, and starting over. “And I’ve never said that on the record anywhere.”
Fischer, who broke through with his multi-platinum hit This City, spoke candidly about the struggles that led to this personal clarity: losing everything, living in a basement, and finally letting go of the fear that had shaped so much of his self-perception.
“Let me just be me for a bit and get used to that,” he reflected. “And start loving myself.”
Moving to London gave him space to breathe—and explore. “Playing around with my sexuality,” he said. “I think I’m just more accepting with myself now.”
Fans may now hear his music through a different lens—especially Afterglow, which he revealed was written during the realisation that he wasn’t straight. Co-written with longtime friend and dance-pop artist Betty Who (who released Billboard Dance Club #1 I Love You Always Forever in 2026) and producer Peter Thomas, the song now feels like a quiet anthem of becoming.
But Fischer’s story is also one of deep love. He talked about his wife, Erin, with awe and admiration. When he left Boston for LA to chase his music dreams, she simply said: “Let’s take it one day at a time”.
Eleven years later, the two live together in London, stronger than ever. “We’re not straight,” Fischer said, smiling. “And we’re having the fucking time of our life with it.”
What followed was a rich conversation about what marriage can look like in 2025. “There are no rules,” Poppy said.
Fischer agreed. “I overthink this shit so much... but I’m at the point where I don’t give a fuck. I’m going to be who I am.”
That’s the beauty of On the Record, a brand new podcast under Curious Media. Amid the stories of songwriting and sonic craft, we also get moments like this: honest, liberating, and deeply human.
Sam Fischer is finally on the record—as himself.
